Have you gone out to buy an electrical appliance, seen an energy efficiency label attached to it and wondered what it meant?

They are designed to help customers see how energy efficient a model or product is before you buy.

But what exactly does an energy label tell you about a particular item?

They tell you the energy efficiency rating. A+++ is the most efficient and D being the least, based on the product energy consumption.

The annual energy consumption (in kWh per year). Each product is calculated using specific EU-defined criteria.

Product Specific Information

The icons on the bottom of the EU energy label will be different depending on the product type and will give additional information about the product.

The following household products have the EU energy label displayed:

  • Refrigerators, freezers and fridge-freezers
  • Washing machines
  • Electric tumble dryers
  • Combined washer-dryers
  • Dishwashers
  • Lamps (light bulbs)
  • Electric ovens
  • Air conditioners
  • Televisions
  • Vacuum cleaners
  • Boilers

More and more products are now carrying the energy labels.
